ปฏิญญาสากลว่าด้วยสิทธิมนุษยชน
Universial Declaration of Human Rights : UDHR
"ด้วยเหตุที่การยอมรับศักดิ์ศรีประจำตัว และสิทธิซึ่งเสมอกันและไม่อาจโอนแก่กันได้ ของสมาชิกทั้งปวงแห่งครอบครัวมนุษย์เป็นรากฐานของเสรีภาพ ความยุติธรรม และสันติภาพในพิภพ
Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,
ด้วยเหตุที่การเมินเฉย และดูหมิ่นเหยียดหยามสิทธิมนุษยชนได้ก่อให้เกิดการอันป่าเถื่อนโหดร้ายทารุณ ซึ่งได้กระทบกระเทือนมโนธรรมของมนุษยชาติอย่างรุนแรง และโดยเหตุที่ได้มีการประกาศปณิธานอันสูงสุดของสามัญชนว่าถึงวาระแห่งโลกแล้วที่มนุษย์จะมีเสรีภาพในการพูดและในความเชื่อถือ รวมทั้งมีเสรีภาพจากความกลัวและความต้องการ
Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people,
ด้วยเหตุที่เป็นสิ่งจำเป็นสิทธิมนุษยชนควรได้รับความคุ้มครองโดยหลักนิติธรรม ถ้าไม่พึงประสงค์ให้มนุษย์ต้องถูกบีบบังคับให้หาทางออก โดยการกบฏต่อทรราชและการกดขี่อันเป็นที่พึ่งแห่งสุดท้าย
Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law,
ด้วยเหตุที่ประดาประชาชนแห่งสหประชาชาติได้ยืนยันไว้ในกฎบัตรถึงความเชื่อมั่นในสิทธิมนุษย์ชนขั้นพื้นฐานในศักดิ์ศรีและคุณค่าของตัวบุคคล และในความเสมอกันแห่งสิทธิของ ทั้งชายและหญิง และได้ตัดสินใจที่จะส่งเสริมความก้าวหน้าทางสังคมตลอดจนมาตรฐานแห่งชาติให้ดีขึ้น ได้มีเสรีภาพมากขึ้น
Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between nations, Whereas the peoples of the United Nations have in the Charter reaffirmed their faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person and in the equal rights of men and women and have determined to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,
ด้วยเหตุที่รัฐสมาชิกได้ปฏิญาณที่จะให้ได้มา โดยร่วมมือกับสหประชาชาติ ซึ่งการส่งเสริมการเคารพและการถือปฏิบัติโดยสากลต่อสิทธิมนุษยชนและเสรีภาพขั้นพื้นฐาน
Whereas Member States have pledged themselves to achieve, in co-operation with the United Nations, the promotion of universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms,
ด้วยเหตุที่ความเข้าใจตรงกันในเรื่องสิทธิและเสรีภาพมีความสำคัญยิ่งเพื่อให้ปฏิญาณนี้เกิดสัมฤทธิผลอย่างเต็มเปี่ยม
Whereas a common understanding of these rights and freedoms is of the greatest importance for the full realization of this pledge,

สมัชชาจึงประกาศให้
ปฏิญญาสากลว่าด้วยสิทธิมนุษยชนนี้เป็นมาตรฐานร่วมกันแห่งความสำเร็จ สำหรับประชาชนทั้งหลายและประชาชาติทั้งปวง ด้วยจุดประสงค์ที่จะให้ปัจเจกบุคคลทุกผู้ทุกนามและองค์กรของสังคมทุกหน่วย โดยการระลึกเสมอ ๆ ถึงปฏิญญานี้ พยายามสั่งสอนและให้การสอนและให้การศึกษาเพื่อส่งเสริมการเคารพต่อสิทธิและเสรีภาพเหล่านี้ และด้วยมาตรฐานที่เจริญก้าวหน้าไปข้างหน้า ทั้งในและระหว่างประเทศ เพื่อให้ได้มาซึ่งการยอมรับและการถือปฏิบัติต่อสิทธิเหล่านั้นสากลและได้ผลทั้งในหมู่ประชาชนของรัฐสมาชิกเอง และในหมู่ประชาชนแห่งดินแดนที่อยู่ภายใต้ดุลอาณาของรัฐสมาชิกดังกล่าว
Now, Therefore THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY proclaims THIS UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction.
